Cullernose Collection
How the collection began…
“Look deep into nature, and then you will understand everything better”. Albert Einstein.
I am exploring provenance and sense of place, within this body of work. The finished pieces represent a specific stretch of the Northumberland coastline with a focus on Cullernose Point between Howick and Craster. This place evokes powerful memories of having stayed and visited, with my father, in childhood.
I am challenging my practice, working directly with the clay in the landscape, experimenting with sculptural aspects of the moon jar form combined with the technique of kurinuki (to hollow out), allowing the moon jar to emerge from the rock. I am also extending my practice to achieve larger scale pieces, using dipped and poured glazes to encourage flow, a sense of fluidity and movement, as an expression of the molten lava rock formations of Cullernose Point.
Within the finished collection I hope to achieve a sense of balance, each moon jar eventually finding the rock which offers it equilibrium and a stable resting place. Showing for the first time at Collect 2026, Somerset House.
